Born in 1776, John Constable was destined for his father's milling business, but he was obdurately opposed to this and persuaded his family he should become an artist. In the same determined spirit, he persisted in painting landscapes at a time when history paintings and portraits were the fashion. Today, Constable's reputation is on the rise once again, as witnessed by the exhibitions of his most famous paintings at the Tate, the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC, and the Huntington Gallery in California. Anthony Bailey's important book explores Constable's life and work, highlighting throughout the dramatic tension between the two.

This is revealed in his letters to John Dunthorne, village handyman and housepainter, and to his best friend and patron, archdeacon John Fisher, to whom he wrote: 'I have a kingdom of my own, both fertile and populous - my landscape and my children'

This is revealed in his letters to John Dunthorne, village handyman and housepainter, and to his best friend and patron, archdeacon John Fisher, to whom he wrote: 'I have a kingdom of my own, both fertile and populous - my landscape and my children'. In recent times, after a period of relative ignominy, Constable's influence on British landscape painting has been re-acknowledged, he has been more widely exhibited and his reputation has been reestablished as one of the masters of his genre.

With Anthony Bailey's new life of John Constable, though, there's nothing else for i. At the end of John Constable: A kingdom of his own, you feel less that you've read a biography than that you've seen a self-portrait - or maybe heard Constable's voice, soft and unadorned like his painting. Poema pictura loquens said Plutarch: poetry is talking pictures. Swap poetry for prose and you get Bailey's drift. We’ll tell you what’s true. You can form your own view.

Anthony Bailey bravely attempts to pin down Constable's genius in A Kingdom of His Own - though all you really need to do is see the artist's work for yourself, says Charles Saumarez Smith. Bailey provides an easy and extremely readable narrative of the circumstances of Constable's upbringing, his family circle in East Bergholt, his education over the river in Dedham grammar school and the social connections of his family.

Like his subject, Anthony Bailey has the great qualities of unobtrusiveness and sensitivity, letting things emerge organically rather than forcing his own imprint upon them. And also like Constable, he has an instinct for the details that can bring an entire canvas to life. This sensitive book resonates with respect and admiration, treating the man with humanity and demolishing for ever the 'chocolate box' frivolity surrounding Constable's name and work.
