Fred Wilde, Edward Woodward (Foreword). His title comes from the early rising mill workers for, in the wake of the knocker-up there would very quickly come the growing clatter of clog-irons on the flagged and cobbled streets as the mill workers hurried to work. We didn't have any knockers-up, other than our parents (!), but near where I lived was a huge (late lamented) sweet factory, Waller & Hartley of 'Milady' fame, and every morning the surrounding streets would be filled with workers, all dressed in their white overalls and the ladies wearing their turbans, making their way to the factory.
