Charles Samuels (September 15, 1902 in Brooklyn, New York – April 27, 1982 in Cuernavaca, Morelos, Mexico) was a . journalist, author and novelist best known for his biographies of celebrities, He penned as-told-to autobiographies for Buster Keaton (My Wonderful World of Slapstick) and Ethel Waters (His Eye is on the Sparrow) which was a best seller. Among his other books were Magnificent Rube: The Life and Gaudy Times of Tex Rickard, and The King: A Biography of Clark Gable.

Widely admired for his operas and symphonic works, and internationally acclaimed for his numerous film scores, Richard Rodney Bennett has received far less appreciation for his choral music.

These 2004 performances by John Rutter and the splendid Cambridge Singers mark the first serious attempt to record a representative album of Bennett's secular and sacred pieces for choir; and due to the favorable attention it has already received, this handsome collection may inspire other, more extensive surveys.
