Virgil Thomson (November 25, 1896 – September 30, 1989) was an American composer and critic. He was instrumental in the development of the "American Sound" in classical music.

It also got something American music journalism had not had before and has rarely had since: a critic who could describe from experience the sounds he hears, the presence and temperaments of the musician producing them, and the urgent matters of art, culture, tradition, talent, and taste that a musician’s performance embodies, all in a signature style that charmed a wide readership

Thomson, like much of Mencken, remains riotously readable. Jeff Simon, The Buffalo News.

Thomson collected his newspaper columns in four volumes: The Musical Scene, The Art of Judging Music, Music Right and Left, and Music . Books related to Virgil Thomson: Music Chronicles 1940-1954 (LOA

All are gathered here, together with a generous selection of Thomson’s uncollected writings. The result is a singular chronicle of a magical time when an unrivaled roster of great conductors (Koussevitzky, Toscanini, Beecham, Stokowski) and legendary performers (Horowitz, Rubinstein, Heifetz, Stern) presented new masters (Copland, Stravinsky, Britten, Bernstein) and re-introduced the classics to a rapt American audience. Virgil Thomson, New York, New York. Marking the 100th anniversary of the ratification of the 19th Amendment guaranteeing women the right to vote, The Mother of Us All (1947) is a historic collaboration between The Met, the New York Philharmonic, and The Juilliard School. Hailed as "the best of all American operas" by revered critic Andrew Porter, the fully staged production will be performed in The Met's magnificent American Wing sculpture gallery, the Charles Engelhard Court.

About Virgil Thomson. Thomson is one of the few true modernists in America. Thomson's music is almost disconcertingly spare and direct. In the consciously American pieces especially, there is a kind of aural equivalent to Cubist collage, as ragtime, waltzes, tangos, two-steps, fiddle tunes, and hymns get pasted onto the texture. Unlike Ives, there's an unsentimental distance and clarity to it all, like someone without illusions able to state exactly what's on his mind
