One of Handel's rare ventures into comedy, Xerxes parodies the conventions of opera seria. Love triangles, swaggering heroism, and all manner of operatic pretensions receive a playful tweaking. Handel's subtle humor never descends into farce, however, and the work possesses all the dramatic intensity and depth of character portrayal found in a serious opera.Based on a real-life emperor, Xerxes I, the story's setting is in fifth-century Persia. The complex plot departs from the historical record to weave a romantic rivalry between the ruler and his handsome brother, replete with intrigue: a misplaced love letter, disguises, and mistaken identities. Throughout the tale's vicissitudes, Handel moves smoothly from drama to comedy and back, using arias with an unprecedented degree of fluidity. Musicians will find this full-score edition of Handel's innovative work an authoritative, practical, and economical resource.

At any rate, Dover's complete score of Giulio Cesare is an extraordinary bargain. The score is basically for string orchestra, with winds used for extra color. There are alternates to several numbers, and they are conveniently placed behind the numbers they would replace. The book is easily read, and large enough to accommodate all orchestration

George Frideric Handel's operas comprise 42 musical dramas that were written between 1705 and 1741 in various genres. He began composing operas in Germany and then for a brief time in Italy to modest success. It was not until he moved to England that he found great success in the genre. His first opera in England, Rinaldo (1711), was met with enthusiasm, and several more Italian operas soon followed

Talk about Xerxes in Full Score (Dover Music Scores)

Funny duck
This is a good printing by Dover. For those familiar with Dover's inexpensive, no frills scores, "Xerxes" will not disappoint. The uninitiated should be forewarned: this score does not contain an English translation (either in the prefatory materials or in the score itself), and some pages are faded. The biggest disadvantage of this edition is the absence of some of the figured bass. While the figured bass numerals are included for most of the recitatives, they are absent for the Overture and some of the arias. I suspect, however, that this issue will irk very few....Overall, a great, inexpensive, score of an important work.
