I have purchased or flipped through dozens of books on watercolor painting, but this one is unique in many respects. This is a beautifully printed book with lots in it for anyone who loves watercolors. You can develop your own technique by studying the masters; this is a time-honored tradition (you can still see people today in the Louvre, copying the works of the masters as an art exercise. I paid $6 for the book and $4 for shipping and would not pay more than this and if I had known that the only useful info for me is from page 1 through 47 I would not have bought it. This book is actually more of a history lesson and I am also NOT a fan of the style. I like realism and I also like abstract but actually painted and not having the drawing or sketch peek through.

It does have some good info up to page 47 about materials and the how watercolour paint is made and brushes and stuff but anything after that I did not read as I did not buy this book for a history lesson watercolour. This book's title makes you think that you will be taught techniques but I would NOT recommend this book for that. If you are looking for a history lesson with some other info on materials and some technique then get it otherwise keep looking.

I am giving it 2 stars for the misleading title and info about it and that I really did not care about the info past page 47.

This is a book for the amateur watercolor painter and for the student to use in conjunction with classwork. It provides an overview of the history of the medium and how it has changed from the Renaissance to the modern era. One of the most interesting aspects of the book is the descriptions of how great painters used watercolor, with comments by their contemporaries, and descriptions of the materials they used to make their colors.

This book contains a good background on paints and brushes and tools of the trade, and then goes on to show technically how various quality artists have gotten the image from mind to paper. This book is good for hours and hours of study.

Demo section of this book gives you many things you can use. I really liked the section on Turner methods.

The first part of the book is what really got me lost. History and data that feels a little out of place if your whole intention is just to start painting. Some background of materials is supposedly needed to provide an explanation on the author's suggestions and guidelines.

I feel that the details for some of the exercises got lost and could have occupied some space that the historical data has in the book. All in all, practicing the exercises in the book can really improve your technique.

Recomended if you enjoy watercolors and want some middle to high complexity exercises to boost your style.
I bought this book to see more of J.M.W. Turner styles of watercolor painting. I did Cock pheasant by Joseph Crawhall in watercolor on paper. It has two interesting Turner examples that like easy to do. I have been teaching my students Turner's style of painting. This book also have several building paintings with detailed pencil drawings. There step by step instruction has enough step that a person should be able to complete it demonstration project. What is nice is that they do a complete painting and not a part of the Master's work. Also, they have some of the demonstrations with a picture of the location where that painting is taken from and then the sketch and then the painting. This is helpful if you wanted to pick another location from a photograph and do a similar sketch and paint with similar colors and style. I would consider this to be an intermediate to advance level watercolor painting.
