You could get any of Roald Dahl’s books of short stories, but a good recommendation from me would be The Complete Short Stories: Volume 1 & 2 by Roald Dahl. So, I highly recommend that you check out his work. This one is called The Hitch Hiker and it appears in volume 2 of The Complete Short Stories. A hitch hiker is someone who waits by the side of the road and hopes to get a lift from someone.

The Hitch-Hiker" is a short story by Roald Dahl that was originally published in the July 1977 issue of the Atlantic Monthly, and later included in Dahl's short story collection The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar and Six More. The story features a man who picks up a hitch-hiker whilst driving to London. The pick-pocketing of a policeman's notebook during a traffic stop closely follows "Hitch-Hike", a 1960 episode of Alfred Hitchcock Presents based on a short story by Ed Lacy.

Many have a surprise ending, but whether they do or not his stories are engaging from beginning to end. Some of Dahl’s stories are a bit on the long side for a short story, but they don’t feel like it. Even the longest ones are well worth the time it takes to read them. After talking about how fast the car can go, the driver accelerates, only to be pulled over by the police. He is very worried, but the hitch-hiker isn’t. Lamb to the Slaughter 3,900 words.
