Pick nearly any two books of fiction from the shelves of a library or bookstore. You can't write convincing, compelling dialogue in fiction unless you like to listen. Read a few pages of each, and compare the treatment of dialogue. Odds are, you'll find that. I'm not talking about listening to the vireos chirping in your redbud or the Great Northern rumbling along the north side tracks either (although these sorts of sounds surely ought to find their way into your fiction).

I have had so much fun with this creative writing course in a book. If you don't have the schedule / time to attend a class and want some help - real help getting started writing - get this book!! It is well organized and laid out. Each chapter focuses on something like plot, character, etc. Then each exercise gives you an assignment, tip, and check your work sections to help you achieve results on the exercise assignment. Each chapter has on average a dozen exercises to help you learn and grow as a writer. I just bought the kindle version so that I can take it with me and writing on my travel notebook. I highly recommend this classroom in a book and have recommended it to many friends over the years.

Through this book, Josip Novakovich helps novice writers gain confidence, experience, and skill. He does this not by coddling writers as if they were pre-school children palying at finger paints, but by making them work hard to attain their goal. Although not all of the 200+ exercises interested me, I found most of them to be interesting enough and several to be quite engaging. Overall, I would highly recommend this book to anyone who wanted to write fiction but wasn't sure where to begin. Also, it's a good text for more advanced writers who have encountered that dreaded ailment: writer's block.

I expected a book that would guide me through writing. This book suggested that I write stories (I realize that writers who write become better writers), and although the writing encouragement was there, it didn't offer the guidelines I had expected.

I really love his books, especially the exercises. He really knows how to get you writing. Some exercises can be quite challenging.

It is definitely not a guide to writing a complete book but it does help you to get think about what is required. Get's you pointed in the right direction and is helpful in developmental skills.

Only a master storyteller could write about the art of story telling the way Novakovich does. Without being intricate, he clearly sketches the way how to become a successful writer of fiction. Indeed worth reading! One of my most used quotes from this book is: "Out of a place, a character is formed; out of a character's motives, plot may follow" (Novakovich, 1995: 28). This reaffirms my conviction that space (setting)has a vitally important role in fiction.
