When ex-headmistress Anne Mustoe gave up her job, bought a bike and took to the road, she couldn't even mend a puncture. 12,000 miles and 15 months later, she was home. Her epic solo journey took her around the world, through Europe, India, the Far East and the United States. From Thessaloniki to Uttar Pradesh, from Chumphon to Singapore, she faced downpours, blizzards and blistering deserts, political turmoil and amorous waiters - alternated with great kindness from strangers along the way. "A Bike Ride" is the first in the series of Anne Mustoe's successful and inspiring travelogues.

A retired British headmistress gets a wild notion to ride around the world. And does.
This is an elegantly written, wryly humorous, uniquely British travelogue.
In true British "stiff upper lip" style, the author, a classical scholar, does not much dwell on herself or her personal tribulations, opting instead to follow the flow of historic events throughout the regions she travels.
When she finally leaves her familiar Western world for India and the Far East, she shows deep appreciation for the people she meets and their cultures, and relishes both the beauty and the desolation she finds around her, as she covers thousands of lonely miles.
I've read many bike travel/adventure books which often feature graphic details of the author's daily suffering, aches & pains, and disgust at the conditions encountered along the way.
Ms. Mustoe's account of her travels is both cerebral and uplifting. The world as seen by a brilliant and self-effacing lady.
A splendid book.

Curious about her later travels, I just discovered she passed away in Syria after a short illness, at age 76, while undertaking what she had described as her last round the world bike tour. What a marvelous, brave woman she was!

I was very disappointed with this book and although I'm still reading it I'm having a difficult time getting through it.

I was reading a blog of an english gal (Ann Wilson titled "Through Europe and Beyond" on crazyguyonabike web site) who is presently doing what Ann Mustoe did and she was inspired to do it by Ann Mustoes book.

I was so engrossed with the other gals blog, enjoying her adventures and many pictures and thought Ann Mustoes book would be similar but instead you're being fed a history lesson with very little of her bicycling adventures. It leaves you wanting but if you like history this is the book for you, she gives it to you lock stock and barrel till it comes out of every pore. On and on paragraph after paragraph of history. This is truly not what I was looking for. I was thinking a bit of history intertwined in her cycling odyssey but instead got the opposite "A bit of cycling intertwined in a history book.

Anne Mustoe was a very refined soul (she died at Aleppo in 2010) who behind her cultured and ladylike exterior nurtured a steely determination to succeed at the things she did. Her first bicycle tour in 1987-88 is described in 'A Bike Ride' and it shows both her intimate knowledge of many things classical, historical, religious and cultural, and her capacity to endure and even prosper on one of the hardest endurance tests an adventurer might attempt.

Based on this book, I am not sure I would choose her as a travelling companion (Neil Gander I would pay to have along on a bike tour, just for the laughs), despite a shared interest in history and religion and cycle touring, but I did admire Anne's tenacity, and I guess, her somewhat school-marmish commitment to certain standards.

The book is well written and properly edited. I enjoyed the American segment the most, partly because it just described her trip without trying to tie it to the wanderings of some great person of antiquity, and partly because the transcontinental route she chose sounds quite good really.

Fun read learning about the history around the world. An average English woman who retires as a heamistress. Buys a specially made bicycle to ride daily. I looked forward each night to read about her experiences.

Imagine the type of research and knowledge that went into Anne Mustoe's route planning (long before access to the internet, GPS, Google Earth and Maps, and online message boards). Incredible. Her writing captures the essence of her journey, daily challenges and the kindness of strangers, and includes lots of history drawn from knowledge beyond a tourist brochure or Lonely Planet (as can be the case with some travel writing).

This book is a knockout. Amiddle aged woman decides she would like to travel the world. She does, on a bicycle! This is an amazing account of a brave journey with a fascinating history lesson thrown in. Travel with Alexander and all kinds of historical people while Anne cycles through countries all around the world. People in the countries she visited were surprised at her daring and physical endurance, while she was so interested in all her surroundings and made it fascinating for the reader. An absolute knockout!!!

I am hoping to do something like this so the book is a great inspiration.
Not as good as her "two wheels in dust" about her journey through India in the Ramayana trail.
