Very few people in our world actually walk in peace with themselves and God. As the Bible teaches, this is because we not only sin, which hinders our relationship with God, but through our choices we establish patterns or cycles of recurring sin to which we become enslaved. Jesus said, "whoever commits sin is a slave of sin" (John 8:34). "Breaking the Cycle of Slavery to Sin" takes a fresh look at how God would lead us out of such slavery and into a life of peace and freedom in His Son Jesus Christ.

In the introduction to my last book; ‘Breaking the Cycle of Slavery to Sin’, I stated that I would not spend time trying to prove that God exists or that the Bible is His word to mankind. However, God Himself is able to satisfy you that He exists and that He has provided His word for you to live by. The Bible contains many of what the Apostle Peter called: the great and precious promises of God.

Gordon, or "Whipped Peter" (fl. 1863), was an enslaved African American who escaped from a Louisiana plantation in March 1863, gaining freedom when he reached the Union camp near Baton Rouge. He became known as the subject of photographs documenting the extensive scarring of his back from whippings received in slavery. Abolitionists distributed these carte de visite photographs of Gordon throughout the United States and internationally to show the abuses of slavery.

While many people would like to think that slavery was a tragedy of the past, the truth is that it still exists today, with up to 46 million people enslaved worldwide. The Rotarian Action Group Against Slavery (RAGAS) has a strategy for fighting this horrible problem, working at the local level. It’s this Rotarian attitude – you give them a problem and instead of throwing their hands up in dismay, they start chipping away at it piece by piece, says Carol Hart Metzker, a member of the action group

John tells us clearly that whoever commits sin is a slave of sin. You are powerless to break this endless cycle.

John tells us clearly that whoever commits sin is a slave of sin. (John 8:34) And that’s what this round-about life is. It’s slavery. What is your attitude regarding sinning? We absolutely do have grace for forgiveness of sin, because of the precious blood that Jesus spilled for us. But His grace does not end there. How can you actually break the chains that bind you, and stop falling in the same sin once and for all? You have to be humble, acknowledge your weakness and need, and be bold to ask for help before you fall.

This diet has helped us grow strong and savage. In our past lives we were slaves and we lived in fear of all the possible ways they could punish us. Now we are free men, free women, and we dream of what abuse we can inflict on them. What retribution we can inflict on them. I only killed one of them, but the other two sustained bone breaking wounds that would keep them out of the battle for the next ten minutes. Another asshole shoved his pike at me from far to the right. I turned my shoulder just in time and the spear point slid across my pauldron and arm.

A thorough account of humility, personal responsibility, and what is required to surrender our will to God. I have known Gordon for over 17 years and we share similar backgrounds. This book is a deep dive into the biblical lessons like love, forgiveness, and grace to live a life free of the bondage of our iniquities. Gordon does a fantastic job of quoting relevant scripture, then explaining what it means, and relating personal experience along with real world examples to support each chapter's premise. His passion for Christ is not tucked away in a closet; at times reading this was like drinking from a fire hose, but knowing Gordon, who is full of energy and has a deep love for Jesus, it is clear that he wants to help others break the chains that bind them. An ideal read for anyone struggling with ongoing sin who wants a better understanding of the bible from one of the most qualified people I know to teach it.

When I first read this I felt as if the author had actually been documenting my life specifically. Each of us has struggles and behaviors that keep us from experiencing the freedom that God has intended for our lives. The author has a way of detailing the process of accepting that freedom, and it was great that he shared his struggles and his journey. A very detailed and logical approach to accepting a wonderful and free gift!

This book is a must read, it takes a look into what causes us to continue to sin when we desire to do good. I delt with a few things from my own life that had been causing me to sin. I am now free from several behaviors that I just could not avoid in my life before reading this book. I would recommend that everyone read this book, it helped me and I know it will help you.
