An important figure in the development of Nietzsche scholarship, Mazzino Montinari (1928-86) dedicated himself to the detailed study of the philosopher's writings. This lifetime of scholarship crystallized in Montinari's work as coeditor of the critical edition of Nietzsche's collected writings. Reading Nietzsche, now available in English for the first time, is a group of essays that grew out of this monumental work. In Reading Nietzsche, Montinari tackles such subjects as the relationship between Nietzsche and Wagner, early drafts of Thus Spoke Zarathustra, and the philosopher's reputation among the Nazis and Marxists of the 1930s and 1940s. He also deals authoritatively with a number of figures who have had an unfortunate influence upon the way Nietzsche has been understood, from the chief Nazi interpreter of Nietzsche, Alfred Bumler, to the chief Marxist interpreter, Georg Lukcs, to Nietzsche's sister, Elisabeth.

Friedrich Nietzsche was born in Roecken, near Leipzig, in 1844 and died in Weimar in 1900. He is considered one of the most important German philosophers and philologists. He studied classic philology and his thinking was deeply influenced by the science of theology, as he came from a religious family. Nietzsche is one of the first existentialists and his works have been richly and variously influential. We take a look at five of them below. Courtesy of Penguin Classics. Even though Nietzsche had a religious upbringing, this book is a criticism of the new ideas of Christianity that, according to the philosopher, destroyed the ancient world, the only real civilization.

Only 9 left in stock (more on the way). As a work of scholarship, it is an awesome achievement, considering that Greg Whitlock was able to produce a coherent text of Nietzche's lecture notes, and performed the most helpful task of looking up every citation, confirming its source, and providing extensive notes to clarify the details of the lectures.
