This book presents a clear and philosophically sound method for identifying, interpreting, and evaluating arguments as they appear in non-technical sources. It focuses on a more functional, real-world goal of argument analysis as a tool for figuring out what is reasonable to believe rather than as an instrument of persuasion. Develops a precise, step-by-step method for analyzing arguments about a variety of topics -- shows how to rewrite arguments in a format that makes them clearer and makes their evaluation easier; and then how to evaluate the rewritten argument. Illustrates methods by applying them to both serious and humorous arguments about different topics as they appear in a variety of contexts â?” e.g., newspaper and magazine editorials and columns, short essays, informal reports of scientific results, etc. Uses simple, relatively non-controversial examples to illustrate the basic ideas and concepts, and then offers more complicated and controversial examples for challenging applications. For anyone interested in identifying, interpreting, and evaluating arguments as they appear in non- technical sources.

Talk about Reason and Argument

I think this is an absolutely wonderful book. I think the second edition is a little more well organized, but all the content and important information is in this edition as well. I took a logic class in undergrad and learned a ton with this as the main textbook/workbook. I lost that book, but I appreciated it so much that I went back and bought it again. Would highly recommend it to anyone!

I do not disagree with other posted reviews. However, I thought I might point out who this book is actually intended for: the uninitiated.

If you have no background in critical thinking or basic philosophical discourse, by all means, pick up this book and give it a read. You will find it immensely helpful.

If you have taken a few courses in philosophy with professors of an analytic bent or find yourself in similar circumstance however, this book will probably do you no good.

The book covers quite a bit of ground and is a very easy read. But anyone with more than cursory knowledge of argumentation will see this book as a overly extended version of a review.

Used this book for a college course. The course was apparently really difficult, and many people were very confused. However, I loved the critical thinking challenge of mastering this book's content.

Good text, however does not have answers for all questions in the chapter quizzes, which makes no sense to me.

I had to read this book for my philosophy class. It was clear and concise, with lots of hands-on exercises. Not a painful read at all!

I believe that this book is very informative. It provides a framework for argument analysis. I have a copy of the Copi text. However, I believe that this text has a more streamlined approach to logic and argument analysis.
Easy to understand. Good material. Every chapter was interesting. Also the material was in good condition as it was said in the description
