Reed Christopher (EN). This bold, globe-spanning survey is the first book to thoroughly explore the radical, long-standing interdependence between art and homosexuality. It draws examples from the full range of the Western tradition, including classical, Renaissance, and contemporary art, with special focus on the modern era. It was in the modern period, when arguments about homosexuality and the avant-garde were especially public, that our current conception of the artist and the homosexual began to take shape, and almost as quickly to overlap.

A brilliant survey, one I have used for teaching undergraduate level courses on Gay art history and identity. Accessible, well written, and a great entrée into the subject.

Brilliantly written with a fabulous assortment of images. I confess that I had to have a dictionary next to me when reading this book, sometimes looking up one word per sentence. But I was glad I took the trouble to make sure I understood every (no-matter-how-big) word. Those big words were always THE perfect word for the sentence. Did I say how great the writing is?
Lots of color images, and we all love that. I loved the Grant Wood picture---the one he wasn't allowed to send through the mail. This book is SO fascinating.

This book offers insight into the art world throughout history and the role that homosexuality played within it. It's compelling and can't put it down. Really good information here and well written. It has met and exceeded my expectations and so far has been a really great starting point on all of the information that is out there. As an artist who happens to be gay, this book has been truly eye-opening for me. Seriously, if you are even considering buying it, do! Love it...
