As an experienced system administrator (AIX, DG-UX, Linux, HP-UX - HP Certified) I have found this book to be very useful. It is not a beginners how to book, but lists a lot of very useful information for day to day work as well as for exam preparation.

True, the included CD is aimed at Windows PCs, but it's very easy to access the PDF files on a Linux system as well without using the Windows programs.

I would recommend this book to anyone studying for RHCE.

Having taken the exam and passed in December 2004, this release of the book is a little dated since the format of the exam changed, but the content of the book is still very relevant.

The exam no longer includes multiple choice questions, but is now entirely performance based. There is an updated version of the book which I did not buy, having already had this one for some time. It is not aimed at people who want to be taught everything, but at people with initiative and willing to go out and practice and learn by themselves. The content is still good and is well worth the price to prepare for the exam, or to work through before going on an RH300 (bootcamp) or other RedHat class.

This is a decent book to get background on the RHCE exam and have an idea as to what it would take to pass. However, the one I purchased was for RHEL 5, which wasn't completely applicable to RHEL 6, especially given the changes made to the structure of the Redhat exams. That was the only option in the time frame I had to get my certification, however. This book was well written, and easy to understand. I did, however, find a different book more helpful to me:

Hands-on Guide to the Red Hat® Exams: RHCSA' and RHCE® Cert Guide and Lab Manual (Certification Guide)

But if you are studying for the RHCE you already knew that.... I am working my way through this book, and the Red Hat official class guide to prep for the exam, not to mention working on the systems on a daily basis. The challenge is working through the aspects of the system that are not related to your day to day job. You really need a small network, or just a virtual network of boxes at home to test and practice on.

What I would LOVE to see in one of these test prep books / software packages is the sorts of labs, practices and simulations similar to the actual Red Hat material.

This is a great book to get you started or to finish review for this exam however I think more experience than just reading this book is needed to pass the exam. I have been using Linux since 2000 and have been wanting to get this certification for some time. Rcently I was working with a company that provided a training budget and sent me to a RHCE boot camp so before I went to the class I purchased this book. I read the book, took the class, and easily passed the exam on the last day of class.

If you have enough Linux experience to resolve most OS server issues then purchasing this book for review and other items you may not do on a regular basis should enable you to pass the exam. There are more than likely items on the exam such as LVCM, NIS, and quotas that a lot of people do not use on a regular basis so this book provides good information in regards to those types of subjects.

The great thing about the exam is that a lot of it is hands on so your not required to resolve problems in a certain manner but only required to come to the correct solution.

I think the RHCE is a valuable certification to obtain for sys admins even though it has not necesarrily benefited me monetarily it has definitely expanded my knowledge base. I do know others who have gained this certification and either recieved raises at their current jobs or moved to different jobs that paid higher wages because of them having the RHCE certification.

My Background: I have about 8 or 9 years or Linux admin experience, My full time job is as a Linux Administrator.

I got this book about a month before I was scheduled to take the exam. I went through the book, doing every lab, even if I thought I knew that particular subject matter. This book covered the list of things to know on Red Hats website in depth.

With the combination of the RH300 class and this book, I was able to easily pass the RHCE on my first try. I highly recommend it to anyone prepping for the exam.

Highly recommend as a study aid. I have always worked with Linux distros at home, but my job recently required more from me in the area of Red Hat Enterprise Linux support. I attended the RH 133 week long class. While attending the class I was also reading this book. It gave me a different angle to the material that the instructor covered and really think that it helped give me the extra push to get my RHCT. I would not say that this book alone would have caused me to pass the exam, but it really helped augment the instructor based class. It is also been a great reference guide in going forward in my new duties with managing RHEL systems around the office.

I used this book right before taking the exam and passed! This is a GREAT book! I have 2 years of Linux Admin experience and this book filled all the gaps that I had.

If you read this book...and do ALL the labs (along with Red Hat's documentation and prep guide); it will prepare you for the test.

I personally _didn't_ take the class (I just took the test) and I passed using the labs in this book. However, I HIGHLY recommend taking the class if you can afford it.

GREAT BOOK!

Overall good information. But the author makes too many assumptions and provides little details for complex topics, such as LVM and physical device configuration. However, in fairness to the author, this is NOT a book to learn LINUX. The book prepares you for the RHCE test. That's why the author assumes that you know LINUX already.
