The layout for Flash Web Design evokes the layered, ture style of Purgason's Web design (lundstromarch. com) and makes one wish the book also existed in movie format. In fact, Purgason's methodology is presented in the last chapter, where he shows the benefits of using Freehand in conjunction with Flash. Enough with the tips and tricks already - design is concept and expression.

Presents deconstructions of successful, real-world Flash animations and interfaces, chosen because they reveal most clearly the techniques crucial to being a successful motion graphics designer. Hillman Curtis calls it motion design and this heavily designed book showcases some of the work his company has done, how the sites were put together and why he chose to create them that way. It's also about communication: universal symbols and the way that moving text and images can tell you more than a static picture on a page. The style of Flash Web Design is, well, rather flash. The writing is personal and casual, peppered with ellipses and sentence fragments: you do get a real feel for what he had in mind with each project and why he made particular choices.

Talk about Flash Web Design

I think by far most of the people who rave about this book are not people who actually USE Flash, as evidenced by the frequency of comments to the effect that other Flash books "had too much information" or were "too difficult". This is more of a coffee table type book, a nicely printed PR piece for one particular person's relatively shallow exploration of what is possible using this software. Of the very small number of actual techniques discussed, there is scant mention of anything to do with ActionScript, or anything interactive to the degree necessary to make something more than the kind of "skip intros" most web users are doubtless tired of by now. Even taken as examples of "motion graphics" (IE: for "design" purposes only, not for making useful web applications), these examples have little to offer that a study of what people like Kyle Cooper are doing, or Saul Bass, or any of dozens of the Flash people out there who are pushing Flash way past the apparent range of what Hilman Curtis is (barely) doing.
In any event, this is probably a great book for people who merely 'dream' of doing Flash. Once they start actually working with it, they will probably leave this particular book to collect dust on the coffee table with back issues of ID magazine or something.

I am not a graphic designer, I am a web application developer, but I use flash regularly, as needed. This book will not teach the uninitiated how to navigate through the toolbars and which setting does what, but it will explore some finer aspects of site design with Flash by reconstrucing hi-visibility sites such as Razorfish and Shockwave's ShockZone. At first, I was a bit put off by the very hip and artful layout of the book (I found it distracting) but once I started focusing on the content, the layout didn't bother me and I actually started to like it... I'm not ready to trade my PC for a Mac, though! The book walks a Flash developer (with basic understanding of Flash references and features) step-by-step through the needed activities used to create some of the hottest Flash content on the web. The screenshots are sharp, the instructions are clear and very easy to follow. Each chapter is dedicated to a different case study site. Many aspects are covered from vector graphic animations to video and audio manipulation. One very nice feature is the author's inclusion of the design principles at work... it is one thing to see how something works, the author includes why it was important that this work. I would highly recommend this book to someone who has learned Flash basics and says to themselves: "Great... now what do I do to design a site?"

I bought this book primarily on the basis of Hilman Curtis reputation as a renowned Flash and motion graphics designer.
Upon first look, I thought the book layout was cool, but when you start digging in and trying to work the examples, it becomes a real distraction. There's a reason most computer books use a bland, clean interface and that's to highlight the information, not the book design.
The examples were also a bit lacking in that most examples don't really don't deliver on the DECONSTRUCTION promise. There's so much involved in making even the simplest Flash animations, from storyboarding to concepts to final product and this book lightly glosses over how the final animation plays out and how some onf the steps were acheived.
If your looking for a "Flash How-to", this is definetly not it. If you want insight on some things Flash can do, the book provides some of that. If you want in depth examples and stuff you can really use in your own Flash work, I found Flash 4 Magic to be well superior to this one those regards.
Great as a show peice for some of Curtis work, but lacking in the meat and potatoes department of Flash development.

I would like to say that this book is awsome. I have been waiting for a book like this for a long time.
I have purchased many books in Flash and none compare to Hillman Curtis. After reading this book my design skills have improved tremendously.
I strongly recommend this book because he just wows you with all his knowledge and his techniques. Also, When reading his book you always get the feeling that he wants to help.
This book is really a benefit to any Flasher who wants to improve on their skills. Great book Hillman!(A+).

The lucid prose of Hillman Curtis&co. explains Flash Web design not only technically but also conceptually...while the step-by-step instructions usually found in design manuals are there, Curtis also expounds on "the big picture" of Web design in a philosophical, thought-provoking manner. Excellent reading for a novice or a pro.

This book is what is the title says "Flash Web Design". It does not always take you step by step through the how tos and what tos of flash. It focuses mainly on the how tos and what tos of web design with flash. I found that the book gave me great inspiration, but little actual know how.

Hillman Curtis's new book once again accredits his prominent reputation as one of today's best designers - Flash or otherwise. Enough with the tips and tricks already - design is concept and expression. The intentions and motivations of this book are entirely beyond those of the baby-stepping how-to manual; Hillman treats his readers as fellow designers, addressing them on a level of maturity few dare to manage. Flash Web Design is meant to educate in the manner a wonderful poem can educate a poet - to inspire emotion, intellect and understanding, not point you toward the words you should use. And Hillman is as forthcoming with his want to share his skills and talents as any reader could request. The beauty of the book as such - with many due thanks to Todd Purgason as well as Hillman - is a testament and mastered lesson as to the meaning behind what Hillman is doing. Those who are looking for simple hand-held lessons should look elsewhere. Flash Web Design is the absolute best of its rare breed.
