Lonely Planet: The world's leading travel guide publisher

Hindi and Urdu are generally considered to be one spoken language with two different literary traditions. This means that Hindi and Urdu speakers who shop in the same markets (and watch the same Bollywood films) have no problems understanding each other. Bengali is spoken by approximately 220 million people, ranking it as the fourth most spoken language in the world.

This book gives you the practical phrases you need to get by in Hindi, Urdu and Bengali, as well as all the fun, spontaneous phrases that can lead to a better understanding of its speakers. Once you've got the hang of how to pronounce the language, the rest is just a matter of confidence. Local knowledge, new relationships and a sense of satisfaction are on the tip of your tongue. So don't just stand there, say something!

Lonely Planet gets you to the heart of a place. Our job is to make amazing travel experiences happen. We visit the places we write about each and every edition. We never take freebies for positive coverage, so you can always rely on us to tell it like it is.

Talk about Lonely Planet Hindi, Urdu Bengali Phrasebook (Lonely Planet Phrasebooks)

These languages have a lot of different dialects. Hard to condense them in a book. I think the "how much is... x?" was written as "koina do" which my hindi-speaking fiance tells me means "How much money can I give you?". Unideal negotiation tactic in the land of big prices for foreigners ????

A quality book with entries on anything and everything you could think of while traveling in the Hindi, Urdu, and Bengali regions of Asia. The print was fine, but readable....a great bargain for the traveler who wants to experience and authentic travel experience. I would highly recommend packing this book in your carry on, it doesn't take much space and could really help you get to know the people and culture you are visiting.

I'm a big fan of Lonely Planet phrasebooks because they pack a lot of practical information into an efficient format. Usually I'm especially impressed by the grammar section at the front, which gives the fearless language learner just enough info to plunge in.

This title in the series unfortunately has a fatal flaw: while it uses actual Hindu, Urdu, and Bengali script through the phrasebook sections, it doesn't use them in the grammar sections. Furthermore, the roman transliterations don't accurately represent all the sounds in the languages (for you language geeks, they don't distinguish the dental/retroflex and aspirated/unaspirated consonants). Imagine if a Japanese speaker tried to learn English from a book that merged L and R, then multiply that problem several times over.

Consequently the grammar section is useless. The phrasebook section is useful for pointing at text on the page but very misleading for speaking or understanding.

I also question squeezing Bengali into a book that's busy enough with Hindi and Urdu.

Pity! I hope LP corrects this in future editions.

I find it very confusing and hard to use. The order in which it is written has little logic and when needed could never find the right sentence..

This book will be fine for looking up phrases on my flight, but as an off-the-cuff use, will be difficult. The book isn't organized particularly well (e.g. sections), so I can imagine I'll have trouble using it as a reference.
Vishura
I am still searching for a better dictionary explaining the Hindi grammar.
Hellstaff
i only wish that when it is the same word in two or all three languages that there was a section specifically grouping
Interesting!
