I took a course (Discovering the New England Landscape) with the author in the 70's and used this book as my guide for discovering treasures in New England. Over time I lost my original copy so I ordered a copy through Amazon. I just returned to Massachusetts after living in Colorado for the last 14 years and I now can "rediscover" the many treasures of my home state. Purchased from Green Great Books in Raleigh, NC.

This was one of the required "textbooks" for a grad school class in ecology back in 1990 and I still reference the book to this day.

This is the best guide to the landscape of southern New England. Jorgensen connects climate, geology and ecology through the concept of ecological communities in a comprehensive but simple to understand way. Field guides now-a-days are collections of stock photos of plants because people judge the book by the number of color photos. This book has very few but that should not be viewed as a shortcoming as the insight and originality of the observations is outstanding. The book is out of print and this is a shame as it would be an excellent introductory textbook to field ecology and native plants classes.
